The Indian counterpart started out as Hutchison Telecom in the year 1994 when the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) awarded the Mumbai circle to the company in the same year. It started from the Mumbai circle and then came to the Delhi circle in the year 1999, Kolkata and Gujarat circle in the year 2000. In the year 2005 Hutchison Telecom was renamed Hutchison Essar Limited and in 2007 Hutchison Telecom entered into an agreement with Vodafone Group PLC and was renamed as Vodafone.
Due to its commitment and superior quality work the Indian company has been successful in achieving 200 million plus subscribers by the year 2016.
As far as India is concerned in the year 2017 a merger between Vodafone and Idea Cellular was announced and the merger formalities have begun and is expected to end by 2019 in which Vodafone is expected to hold 45.1% stake and the Aditya Birla Group will have 26% stake with the balance shares with the public.

Behind the scene, the story of the parent company goes like this – Vodafone was officially launched under the brand name Racal – Vodafone (Holdings) Ltd. in 1985 and operated out of the United Kingdom. The M-Pesa service is currently operational in the countries of Albania, Congo, Egypt, Ghana, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Romania and Tanzania. The application is a money transfer service and has been made primarily for millions of people who do not have a bank account or have only limited access to a bank account. For such people, M-Pesa helps in sending and receiving money, recharge their prepaid connections, settle payment against postpaid connections and much more. For this the user needs to have a mobile phone number and register for the service and download the M-Pesa App. Although the service is also available at reputed online recharge portals like Paytm, PhonePe, Mobikwik and more.
